Online Grocery Sales Are Beginning to Stabilize

A new survey suggests that the online grocery market has continued to tail off since its initial boom during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, online grocery shopping skyrocketed as consumers stayed quarantined in their homes. Now, as restrictions begin to lessen, shoppers want to go back into their favorite in-person stores.

Of those polled, 54.3% have purchased groceries online in the past 12 months, which is down from 59% last year. Despite the drop, there are still growth opportunities when it comes to online shopping options. In 2022, 28.3% of those polled did most or almost all of their grocery shopping online, compared to 24.7% in 2021 and 14% in 2020. This means stores with online shopping options capture a meaningful share of full-basket sales and returning customers.
